Step 03 — What Is Eco Printing?
Eco printing is a technique for transferring the colour, shape, and detail of plants directly onto fabric or paper through contact — no separate dyebath required. The plant material itself does the work. You arrange leaves, flowers, or bark onto a damp surface, roll or fold it tightly, bind it, and then apply heat (usually steam or simmering water). The result is a one-of-a-kind impression: veins, edges, and pigments pressed into the cloth or page in ways that no mechanical print can replicate.
The term was popularised by Australian artist India Flint, who developed and named the practice in the early 2000s. It draws on older traditions — botanical contact printing, Japanese gyotaku (fish printing), and plant-rubbing — but Flint refined it into a repeatable, textile-focused craft with its own vocabulary and community.
How It Differs from Natural Dyeing
In conventional natural dyeing, plant material is simmered in water to release its pigment into a liquid bath, and the fabric soaks in that bath. The colour is even and all-over. Eco printing skips the bath entirely. The plant touches the cloth directly, so the impression mirrors the plant’s actual form — you see the leaf’s silhouette and internal structure, not just its colour.
This directness is both the magic and the limitation. Eco printing creates unique, localised marks. It does not produce flat, uniform colour across a whole piece of fabric.
What Makes a Good Eco Print?
Not every plant prints well. The best candidates have tannin-rich leaves (tannins act as a built-in mordant) and concentrated pigment close to the leaf surface. Eucalyptus, oak, Japanese indigo, rose, and many ferns are reliable choices. You’ll explore this in detail in Step 13 — Choosing Plants for Eco Printing.
The substrate matters too. Protein fibres — silk and wool — accept plant pigments most readily. Cotton and linen work but usually need a tannin pre-treatment. Paper made from cotton or linen rag is ideal for paper printing; see Step 15 — Eco Printing on Paper.
The Basic Process at a Glance
- Dampen your fabric or paper.
- Arrange plant material on one half of the surface.
- Fold or roll the substrate around the plants (or layer plants between sheets).
- Bind tightly with string or rubber bands.
- Steam or simmer the bundle for 30–90 minutes.
- Unwrap, remove plants, and rinse.

Why Try Eco Printing?
Eco printing is immediate and experimental. Unlike a dyebath, where you wait hours to see results, unwrapping a bundle feels like opening a gift — you genuinely do not know exactly what you’ll find. That unpredictability draws many makers to it as a meditative, low-control practice. It also requires very little equipment: a pot, some string, fabric, and a walk in the garden.
